CHIPSAT. ,
2003-005B
- The Cosmic Hot Interstellar Plasma Spectrometer (CHIPS) satellite is a
NASA University Class Explorer mission (UNEX), by the University of
California (US). The spacecraft was manufactured by SpaceDev under a US$6.8m
contract (including extensions, 1999), and carries a single instrument built
by the UoC. The total mission cost is reported to have been US$14.5m and the
mission lifetime is 1 year. A further US$2m will be spent in data analysis.
It will be operated via TCP/IP and FTP/IP (internet) protocols.
The spacecraft was launched on a DELTA launcher form Vandenberg Air Force
Base on the 14th January 2003, as a piggyback to the ICESAT mission. It
weighs 62kg, and was launched into a 590km circular orbit inclined at 94
degrees.
The spacecraft is three-axis stabilised. More...

- XSS-10 was launched on top of a DELTA launcher on the 29th January 2003
into a 517x804km orbit inclined at 98 degrees,
alongside a NAVSAT satellite. The spacecraft was aimed at testing remote inspection,
and was deployed to make a series of 35m approaches to the Delta upper
stage. The spacecraft carries a camera.

- The spacecraft was originally based around two 50kg microsatellites to be deployed from SPARTAN 251 which in
turn would be deployed from the
Shuttle. More...
