Future launches
Ariane-4 has an impressive record, with only 3 failures in over 114 launches
by the end of 2002.
ARIANE 4
- The ARIANE launcher provides two standard methods for carrying small secondary payloads.
The ARIANE Structure for Auxiliary Payloads has been flown on a number of launches. The
picture on the right shows the V59 ASAP, and a further picture
illustrates how SPOT-1 is mounted with respect to the V35 ASAP with six secondary payloads
for V35. Payloads can also be carried within the Spelda launch adapter.
-
ARIANE 5
- The ARIANE-5 launcher also provides two standard methods for carrying small secondary
payloads. The ARIANE Structure for Auxiliary Payloads is being developed in order to carry
up to 8 satellites each weighing up to 80kg each. Alternatively a dedicated ASAP for up to
4 small satellites each weighing 300kg can be carried. Hybrid combinations are also
possible, with a total small satellite mass of 1200kg.
The ASAP has a total loading capacity of 200kg, with a limit of 50kg per spacecraft. A
typical cost for the ASAP launch is about $1.2M (ARIANE Mission V59), which is shared
amongst the secondary payloads. The primary payload is deployed first, followed by the
secondary payloads, using own deployment mechanisms. The launcher is typically manoeuvred
between deployment of the various payloads to avoid them all returning to the same place
the next orbit!

A second method for launching small satellites on ARIANE-4, is to make use of the space
between the adapter ring for the main payload, and the rocket upper stage. Loading up to
300kg can be accommodated in a cylindrical space 1.5m high and 2m in diameter. Several
spacecraft have been launched in this fashion.
